September 2012 brought major media attention to the region with the Democratic National Convention.  This September will bring yet another round of international exposure, this time located specifically on our turf.  The Chiquita Classic, part of the official PGA’s Tour (formerly the Nationwide Tour), has chosen River Run in Davidson to host the September 2-8, 2013 golf tournament.

The event, held at Longview in south Charlotte last year, is one of four prestigious tournaments which determine the 50 players who earn PGA TOUR playing privileges for the 2013-2014 season.  The PGA has changed the way players earn a TOUR card; there is no more “Q school” or qualifying school.  Instead the top 25 finishers of the Tour playoff series are guaranteed their card.  The Chiquita Classic is the second tournament in the series, and carries a $1 million dollar purse.

The September dates coincide with the bye week in the PGA’s Fed Ex playoffs schedule making it the only tournament on national television and the Golf Channel during that week.  The event will be broadcast in 37 countries.  PGA players from places 126 – 200 on the money list will need to play the Web.Com playoff events to attempt to earn a card.  At this time about 150 players are expected for the upcoming Chiquita Classic.  The hosting agreement with River Run will run for three consecutive years, from 2013 through 2015.
