Visit Lake Norman and the Charlotte Regional Visitor Association (CRVA) are members of a consortium of organizations with a goal to pave the way for improving the environment through sustainable events and business practices. Special events should leave a lasting impression on YOU, not on the earth! Ask vendors about green practices and sustainable options.

Green Sustainable Products Examples: In choosing "products" being used at a conference, think about using products that adhere to more sustainable measures.

  • Registration Bags: all registration bags are made of recycled materials and do not use chlorine based compounds.
  • Centerpieces: the selection of centerpieces should take into account sustainable practices such as process for shipping and organic versus non-organic.
  • Linens: the conference reviewed linen vendors to examine their process for dry cleaning and other sustainable practices.

Green Facility Considerations:

  • Set up recycling stations within the expo and outside of the breakout session rooms.
  • Offer non-bottled refreshments to reduce waste and potential for non-recycling
  • Use cups made of materials that could decompose in as little as 50 days.
  • Include food and beverage locally sourced and organic foods. Additionally, leftover food can be donated to a local nonprofit organization or used for composting.
  • Use electronic signage in place of PVC and Chloroplast in front of breakout sessions.

Green Team Partners (Regional):

  • Wipe Out Waste - Mecklenburg County program to promote both commercial and residential recycling and conservation efforts.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina - Strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. Serve 14 counties in NC through regional distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies that assist people in need.
  • Charlotte Green Team - Launched in July 2007, the first meeting convened more than 30 individuals representing major corporations, the city and county, nonprofit organizations, convention and event facilities, and other hospitality related organizations. The overall goal of the group is to pave the way for improving the environment through sustainable events and business practices.
  • Convene Green Alliance - The Convene Green Alliance is a grass-roots, industry initiative that is being spearheaded by several high-profile associations that seek to affect positive environmental practices through national, regional and local outreach and education. This initiative was developed in response to members' demands that their association (and the meetings and events they sponsor), reflect best environmental practices.
