About Catawba Riverkeeper

As an environmental nonprofit, the Catawba Riverkeeper is deeply committed to preservation, advocacy, and education. Their specialized program gives K-12 students the chance to swap the traditional classroom for a day on the lake to learn about watershed science. Not only do these hands-on lessons meet and exceed state standards, but the organization is also currently working with local administrations to officially integrate the Floating Classroom into school curriculums.

When they aren't teaching, they are out on Lake Norman and the Catawba River Basin studying and recording vital data, turning complex science into material everyone can understand. Through Swim Guide—one of their most popular water quality monitoring programs—they aim to give residents the data they need to know it's safe to swim in the Basin's lakes and rivers. Every summer, Riverkeeper staff, interns, and volunteers collect weekly samples. Results are posted on Fridays using a clear stoplight system, allowing residents to make informed decisions about swimming over the weekend.

Floating Classroom

The Floating Classroom is operated by an environmental scientist and a USCG-certified captain, Captain Ronnie, who grew up right here on Lake Norman. He loves sharing memories of his grandmother taking him out on the water, bringing a lifetime of local knowledge to your time on the boat.

Field trips are available Monday-Friday for up to 30 people, featuring lessons centered around environmental education with a focus on water quality, ecology, wildlife, and environmental stewardship. You are not only getting to enjoy time on Lake Norman, but also the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences, including testing water straight from the lake. You will test for two key parameters: pH and dissolved oxygen. Equipped with multiple microscopes, you get a firsthand look at the tiny organisms commonly found in Lake Norman. Peer through the lenses to see what local algae looks like up close, alongside other microorganisms like Phytoplankton.

Sunset Cruises

Sunset on the lake is an experience everyone should enjoy! Luckily, the Catawba Riverkeeper Floating Classroom offers a sunset cruise on Friday and Saturday evenings. While enjoying the scenery, you will learn about water quality, local wildlife, and the history of Lake Norman and the Catawba-Wateree River Basin. There are several engaging activities to enjoy while onboard, from testing water samples to spotting local fish and birds. You might even see an Osprey, a protected species in North Carolina often found nesting on top of the lake's navigation markers. While these nests can be inconvenient for boats passing at night, they are a welcome sight during an evening cruise.

In between all the science, the captain keeps the energy high by playing great music and leading fun games for everyone onboard. Food and drinks are not provided, but you are more than welcome to bring your own. Beer and wine are permitted; hard liquor is not. The cruise launches from Stutts Marina, and tickets can be purchased directly on their website.

Private Charters

Private charters on the Floating Classroom are also available throughout the week, making it a perfect option whether you want to learn about watershed science, dive into Lake Norman history, or simply enjoy a relaxing time on the water. The charters range from 2 to 8 hours long with options to include their educational program, which is perfect for families and children interested in learning about Lake Norman and watershed science. If you decide you would like to include the educational program, just make sure to mention that in your inquiry email!
