  • General William Lee Davidson He fought under General George Washington and led a successful attack at the Battle of Colson's Mill. He was killed in the Battle of Cowan's Ford in 1781 as he directed the defense of the Patriots. A couple Patriots found his body the next day which they took to Hopewell Presbyterian Church to bury him. He still lies where he was buried that day. The town of Davidson and Davidson College are named for him.
